What do you think of love relationships between Taiwanese and foreigners? Do you think you could be involved in a relationship with a foreigner? If so, could you do so with a black person? A white person? Another Asian? Would you rather have a partner who shared the same cultural background as you but was of a different race (for example, a white person born and raised in Taiwan), or someone of the same race with a different cultural background (for example, an ABC)? Why?

Dear Aunt Julie,

This is Yu-Huei, your niece in Taipei. I’m eighteen years old now and have just graduated from high school. I have a 31-year-old American boyfriend named Les. He treats me very well and really respects me. He’s a teacher at Global Village, which is the English-language cram school where I was studying when I met him.

Do you see any problems in this relationship? What do you think of the way they met? Do you think the difference in their ages is too large? Why or why not? Why do you think there are more foreign men dating Taiwanese women, than Taiwanese men dating foreign women? Do you know any “international” couples? Would you like to have a foreigner as a lover? Why or why not?

Les tells me that he really loves me and wants us to live together. Don’t misunderstand me; of course, we will have separate bedrooms. I plan to stay a virgin until I get married. But I really love him and want to live with him. Also, it will be a great opportunity to practice my English.

Would you consider living together with a lover before marriage? Why or why not? Do you have any friends who have lived together with a lover? Do you think it is a good idea for people to stay virgins until they get married? Why or why not? Would you date a foreigner just to be able to practice your English? Why or why not?

The problem is my parents. They were already unhappy that my boyfriend is a foreigner, but now they are furious. They say I am stupid, and are threatening to disown me if I don’t listen to them and break up with Les, who they say is a bad man just for asking me to live with him..

What should I do?

Yu-Huei

Have your parents ever gotten so angry at you that they threatened to disown you? What is the angriest they have ever gotten at you? Have you ever gotten very angry at your parents? How would you feel if you were Yu-Huei’s parents? Would you react the same way? What do you think Yu-Huei should do?

DISCUSSION  |  GROUP A

How do you think Yu-Huei feels? Why? Can you sympathize with her? What are some ways having an American boyfriend might be better than having a Taiwanese boyfriend? What would be some advantages for Yu-Huei of living with Les? Do you think her parents are communicating with her in the best way? Do you think there is a better way for them to communicate with Yu-Huei? When your parents don’t agree with one of your plans, what do you do? What is the best way to persuade someone who doesn’t agree with you?

DISCUSSION  |  GROUP B

How do you think Les feels? Why? Can you sympathize with him? Do you think foreigners in Taiwan feel lonely? Do you think it is good for them to date Taiwanese, or do you think it is better for foreigners to date other foreigners? Why? In what ways do foreign men treat their girlfriends better than Taiwanese men? What are some of the advantages of living together with a lover? In what ways is it better than marriage? How would you feel if your lover’s parents didn’t like you? What should Les do to make Yu-Huei’s parents like him better?

DISCUSSION  |  GROUP C

How do you think Yu-Huei’s parents feel? Why? Can you sympathize with them? What are some of the disadvantages for a Taiwanese person of dating a foreigner? What kinds of problems do you think a Taiwanese girlfriend/American boyfriend might have? Do you think it’s OK to date a foreigner just because you want to practice your English? Why or why not? Why might it be a bad idea for Yu-Huei to live together with her American boyfriend? Do you think it’s possible that Yu-Huei and her boyfriend could live together and not start a sexual relationship? What are some reasons for a girl to stay a virgin until marriage? Do you think getting angry and making threats is the best way to persuade Yu-Huei? Why or why not? What might be a better way?
